About Alta Council

The hardest decisions a school leader makes rarely fit inside one function. Whether to add a program, how to close a shortfall, when to tell the board something they will not want to hear: each one reaches across academics, finance, enrollment, and strategy at the same time.

A leader working through a call like that needs range. Districts and large networks have a central office deep enough to put all four perspectives in one room on short notice. Independent charters and small networks answer the same questions with a leadership team already carrying a full load, and the alternatives — a larger cabinet, an outside consultant, hours of reading — are none of them available on the Tuesday the decision is actually in front of you.

Alta Council is a table of advisors who take up the same question from different seats, build on each other, and disagree where they should. A chief of staff works out which seats a question touches — which advise in full, which test one assumption, and which only check — in what order they should speak, and drafts the record at the end. You chair the session and you make the call. What you keep afterwards is a written record of what you decided and why, which is the part that matters six months later when somebody asks.

It is built for brick-and-mortar, virtual, and hybrid charters alike. The advisors read which one yours is, and it changes what they test: what attendance means, what a teacher’s capacity is measured in, which costs are real.

They are software, not people. Each one runs on a current AI model and is given the remit, the obligations, and the limits of a real executive seat, which is why the finance advisor argues for the budget and the academic advisor argues for the students. Nobody is reading your sessions and writing back.

That mechanism is not the point. Better executive thinking is the point, and the advisors are how it gets made. What they give you is counsel, not legal, financial, or compliance advice, and each one will tell you when a question belongs with your attorney, your auditor, or your authorizer instead. The judgment stays yours, and so does the decision.

You can, and for plenty of work you should. The general assistants are very good and they get better every few months. Alta Council is built on one of them, so those improvements arrive here too. Nothing below claims a general assistant cannot do this work.

The difference is who does the work around the model. With a general assistant you start at a blank box, and everything after that is yours: choosing which perspective to ask for, describing your school again, asking for the counterargument, noticing what the last answer assumed, reconciling two answers that disagree, and writing down where you landed. The intelligence is there. The structure is your job, every time.

Alta starts further in. A chief of staff reads the question and works out which seats it touches. The advisors already know your state, your grade span, your cash position, and what you decided three months ago. Each one is obliged to its own remit, so the finance seat argues for the budget whether or not that is what you wanted to hear. Two checks run whether or not you thought to ask: whether the decision is yours or the board’s, and whether it moves a service a student is owed. Where a question belongs with your attorney, auditor, or special-education director, the council says so and gives you the question to take to them. The session ends with a written record instead of a conversation you have to remember.

A general assistant gives you something to direct. Alta gives you a process that works the decision with you. On a Tuesday between meetings, that difference is most of the value.
